I've been trying to get my servlet-based graphics (running on Tomcat under Linux) to work in a headless environment. We actually use a third pary library - ObjectPlanet's EasyCharts - as the basis for our graphs and charts.

Like everyone else I started with an error from AWT stating it couldn't connect to the X11 environment. I found PJA and installed it but as I now find, We're using Java 1.4.1 (no, we can't change) so having got PJA installed it doesn't work.

I thought I'd try setting java.awt.headless to true instead.

If I set java.awt.headless to true I get a HeadlessException out of java.awt.Frame which seems somewhat bizarre. I thought that setting java.awt.headless to true would tell Java to use it's internal headless work-around - but all it does is throw a different error.

Can anyone shed light on what I am doing wrong? Are there any other ways of getting around my headless problem?

Please try PJA 2.5 Beta version available at http://www.eteks.com/pja/en/#Download . It should work under JDK 1.4.1 and JDK 1.4.2.
